Chess Club

CHESS CLUB Navigation Chess is one of the most popular clubs with the pupils. Strategic thinking and calculating are key areas which this club aims to develop amongst the children. We have a Chess team which competes in a local league every year and regularly has come out on top. We have had many national representatives in Chess with some coming out on top in regional competitions against players in Southern Africa. I Kanyemba

Wildlife

WILDLIFE Navigation Our local flora and fauna is suffering at the development and recklessness of human behavior. Wildlife aims to teach children how to care for their natural environment in sustainable methods. Regular trips to the Botanic Gardens which we share our boundaries with as well as trips to game reserves make this a favourite club for the pupils. We hope to groom children who will improve our environment and not continue to destroy it.

Athletics

ATHLETICS Navigation Hartmann House competes in the First Division of the EPSA Athletics League, our coaches and boys work very hard for the school to stay in this tough division. Despite the number of boys in the schools that Hartmann House competes with, Hartmann House continues to be a top athletics school. Field disciplines (high jump and long jump) are taught to all boys. However, only boys from under 11 to under 13, participate in these disciplines at inter-school events. All the boys take part in track events, but only boys who are under 12 and 13 take part in hurdles. The four Housemasters are involved with coaching athletics, this gives them a unique opportunity to carefully select their boys and put them in appropriate teams for the Inter-House Athletics. The Inter-House is divided into two parts, prior events and main events. All jumps and the 1500m races are done during the prior events, leaving all track events to be conducted on the main events day.  Other than the major EPSA meet which is held in the second last week of term, Hartmann House participates in the Bishopslea and the Ruzawi Invitational Meets.

Table Tennis

TENNIS Navigation Table Tennis is played in the Hartmann House Old Hall popularly known as the ‘Tank’. The facility allows students to train on four tables simultaneously. The sport is offered to all age groups all year round. Training sessions are divided into two days for each age group per week. Students participating in the table tennis program receive top level guidance from a specialist coach. Table tennis offers the boys a chance to participate in a fun environment while learning very useful skills. Many interschool matches are played throughout the year. There can’t be many Junior Schools in Zimbabwe that offer the extensive range of sports and excellent coaching that Hartmann House is able to provide to all boys enrolled at the school.

Director Of Sport Mr Edmund Njazi

DIRECTOR OF SPORT MR EDMUND NJAZI Navigation Our thrust as the sports department is to continue having a school where boys have access to a robust, well-structured highly organised physical education and sports programme, which will promote social development and life skills, as well as basic exercise and advanced skills training. All this in the confines of a fun and safe environment extensively involving all boys from Infants (Grades 0 to 2) and the main School, Grades 3 to7. The Hartmann House sports programme has and sustains a very positive impact on the boys. Most importantly the boys must continue to learn communication and interaction, while being challenged to excel physically and mentally. The boys are taught valuable skills such as Sportsmanship And Integrity and the boys will continuously be taught to have a very  high regard for the truth, playing according to the rules as well as acting in ethical ways at all times. These are critical tenets that tie in very well with the School’s ethos as a Jesuit establishment. Hartmann House offers a huge variety of sporting activities reinforcing the need for the boys to participate in the widest possible range, competing at various inter-school levels. The school enables the boys to play against schools of the same quality and standards. We participate in inter-provincial tournaments and embark on national and international tours. It is imperative that while the boys are at Hartmann House they must get vast exposure to all levels of competition. Hartmann House has given rise to many boys in various sporting codes who have represented Harare Province and a number of boys who have progressed to represent Zimbabwe at International level.  Hartmann House offers excellent sporting facilities, coaches and equipment. In general boys have four afternoons of sporting activities per week, Monday to Thursday, as well as participating in some Friday and Saturday matches, festivals and tournaments. It is our strong belief that parents, guardians and teachers should encourage the boys to participate in sport. We believe that sport establishes the notion of trust and builds teamwork, hard work and perseverance. These fundamentals translate beyond the field of play into all aspects of life, whether be it in the classroom or at home.  On this front we continuously work closely with parents; the objective being the establishment of a stable and continuous parents’ support base. Boys/parents get a very detailed termly calendar which has all the school activities, and in instances where there is a deviation from this calendar at short notice, parents are notified via the D6 communicator. 2020 AGE GROUPSJuniors (Colts)Born 2012 Under 9Born 2011 Under 10Born 2010 Under 11SeniorsBorn 2009 Under 12Born 2008 Under 13Born 2007 Under 14 (Open/Overage)Boys participate in age groups as per the year they were born in, age groups are not necessarily determined by the grade they are in.
